Tie-breakers

In any Swiss-system tournaments, it is inevitable for players to end up with the same score. The only resolution to decide who gets to enter the Top 8 is through Tie-breaker.

In this article, we’ll explore the various types of Tie-breakers commonly employed and the strength and weakness of each system. At the end of the article, I will suggest a new form of Tie-breaker that can be employed easily on pen and paper.

Twilight Beat (Part II)

Continuing from the previous post, we shall make some modifications to the deck so as to retain its competitive edge in the current metagame.

Instead of aiming to beat Undead Synchro like in the previous version, the new Twilight Beat is aimed to beat Dimensional Eatos. Credits to Rauzes for the modifications.

Twilight Beat (Part I)

The Duelist’s Codex is and will continue to concentrate primarily on rulings and game mechanics. However, due to popular demands, here’s a long belated post of a personal deck of mine: Twilight Beat. Also joking known as AKB (AKira Beat) by Bahamut.

More commonly known as Light and Darkness Beat (光闇ビート) in the OCG and Chaos Beat in the TCG, Twilight Beat is simply based on the concept of abusing the semi-restricted Chaos Sorcerer.

Damage Calculation – Before and During

Honest

I had been thinking about Bahamut84’s post about Honest and Shrink for the past few days. There was something odd about the interaction, but I just couldn’t pinpoint it. It was only upon further research that I had found the reason.

Skill Drain vs Light/Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror

Imprisoning MirrorWith Lightsworn, Undead Synchro and Grave Blackwing topping the current metagame, it is not surprising to see Light-Imprisoning Mirror and Shadow-Imprisoning Mirror in various side decks. Though the effects of both Imprisoning Mirrors look very similar to the effect of Skill Drain, they are in fact very different. It is not uncommon that players often mixed them up.

Ruling Update: Rivalry of Warlords

Rivalry of Warlords

After Benjamin’s return from the World Championship 2009 held in Tokyo, he mentioned that two different rulings were used in Japan.

Firstly, targets have to be chosen during activation, even before any cards can be chained to it. This is the correct play, but most Singaporean Duelists are still committing this misplay, as I had mentioned in my earlier post.

Secondly, Gladiator Beast monsters are able to tag into another of a different type even while Rivalry of Warlords is in activation. It was then that I realized that some rulings were updated after checking up 遊戯王カードWiki. The following posts have been updated as well to reflect the current rulings: Rivalry of Warlords (Part II), Trap Eater.

Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor

Blackwing - Vayu the Emblem of HonorAs we are nearing the end of this ban/restriction list, the Japanese metagame is shifting once again; Graveyard Blackwings is giving Synchro Cat a run for their money.

To have a better understanding of the strength and weakness of Graveyard Blackwings, we will be looking at the FAQ of one of its key card: Blackwing – Vayu the Emblem of Honor.

Road of the King

Road of the KingDue to DMCT Summer 2009 and Yu-Gi-Oh! Singapore National 2009 that happened in the past month, I haven’t been updating this blog. Hopefully, more updates will resume soon.

But for now, I’m a little busy compiling all the deck lists of Duelists around the world who have won invitations to the Yu-Gi-Oh! World Championship 2009 held in Tokyo. Without any further ado, I present:
Road of the King.

Effects that Target

Solemn Judgment & Mystical Space TyphoonRecently there’s been a strange play going on: players are saying that upon the activation of a Spell/Trap card, once the target has been chosen, that Spell/Trap card can no longer be negated by a Counter Trap.

This is a misunderstanding of the game mechanics.

Rivalry of Warlords (Part II)

Rivalry of Warlords

After touching on the basics of Rivalry of Warlords in our previous post, Rivalry of Warlords (Part I), we shall now take a look at the more complex interactions with other cards.

As the FAQs are still being continuously updated, the rulings that are translated here are correct as of this point of writing.

Last update: 11th August 2009.
