Card Legality: Asian Restriction

With immediate effect, most restriction on the usage of Japanese promotional cards in official sanctioned tournaments in the Asia region (excluding Japan and South Korea) has been lifted.

Premium Pack, Limited Edition Pack, VJump Edition Pack and various Shueisha Promotional Cards from Weekly Jump, VJump, Valuable Book and Manga are now legal in Asia. However, exclusive cards from Duel Terminal 3 and onwards are still forbidden.

The following are forbidden (unless reprinted outside of Duel Terminal*, excluding DT01 & DT02**):

  • [DT03] Duel Terminal 3 – Justice Strikes Back!!
  • [DT04] Duel Terminal 4 – Demon Roar God Revival!!
  • [DT05] Duel Terminal 5 – Champion of Chaos!!
  • [DT06] Duel Terminal 6 – Dragunity of the Hurricane!!
  • [DT07] Duel Terminal 7 – Charge of the Genex!!
  • [DT08] Duel Terminal 8 – Pulse of the Trishula!!
  • [DT09] Duel Terminal 9 – Vylon Descends!!
  • [DT10] Duel Terminal 10 – Raid of the Inverz!!
  • [DT11] Duel Terminal 11 – Judgment of Omega!!
  • [DT12] Duel Terminal 12 – Xyz Startup!
  • [DT13] Duel Terminal 13 – Sacred Star Knights!!
  • [DT14] Duel Terminal 14 – Ouroboros, Wicked Dragon of Destruction!!
  • [DTC1] Duel Terminal Chronicle 1 – Chapter of Awakening
  • [DTC2] Duel Terminal Chronicle 2 – Chapter of Chaos
  • [DTC3] Duel Terminal Chronicle 3 – Chapter of Destruction
  • [DTC4] Duel Terminal Chronicle 4 – Chapter of Opposites

*If the card is reprinted in at least one of the legal sets, you may use any version of that card. For example, “Jurrac Guaiba” (DT06-JP018) was reprinted in Tournament Pack 2011 Vol.3 (TP19-JP004), hence you are allowed to use the Duel Terminal version of “Jurrac Guaiba”.
**[DT01] Duel Terminal 1 – Synchro Awakening!! and [DT02] Duel Terminal – Invasion of Worms!! are legal.

Updated as of 1st March 2013.

Without a doubt, the biggest impact that this legality revision has on the Asian metagame would be the rise of HEROes.

Airman cannot be defeated!

Control decks gained a huge addition in the form of “Thunder King Rai-Oh” and “Doomcaliber Knight”.

Direct attacking now involves the risk of triggering a “Gorz the Emissary of Darkness”.

The introduction of “Number 16: Shock Master” would also meant that alternate win decks like Final Countdown and Chain Burn would be having a harder time. Though there is also a minor boost from “Gold Sarcophagus”.

Why are DT03-14 are the only ones not legal? AFAIK, Premium Pack, Limited Edition Pack, V-Jump Edition Pack, and various Shueisha Books were NEVER legalized & sold commercially outside Japan either. What makes these different from the Duel Terminal exclusives?

Shueisha books were actually legally distributed in Hong Kong and Taiwan. There was quite a big commotion in Asian Championship 2010 when the Taiwan representive was found with illegal copies of “Alector, Sovereign of Birds” in his side deck. He had prior qualified with the exact same deck just hours before in the Taiwan Asian Championship Qualifer. “Alector, Sovereign of Birds” was legal in the Taiwan ACQ 2010 but illegal in the Asian Championship 2010. Both events were held on the same day, at the same venue.

In the first place, the legality were originally implemented by Konami Asia back in 2008. Prior to that, we were playing with all sorts of promotional cards in sanctioned events – ACQ & WCQ.

I could only say that the decisions to forbid and/or allow promotional cards solely lies with Konami Asia. There is no plausible reasoning that I could infer.

Disclaimer: I am not an employee or representative of Konami Asia. My opinions are merely based on my personal observations and experience.

So still no Ophion, right? Oh boy, I’d love to see him in action in a big tourney, but guess I’ll have to wait more. Do you know when Ophion will be released in a proper pack (still only in DT-14, I think)?

Yes, DT exclusive decks like Dragunity, Lavalval and Evilswarm are still forbidden in official sanctioned events.

It seems that Konami has no intention of reprinting DT exclusives outside of DT yet. DTC is the only reprints of DT cards, but they are still DT cards.

Actually, Lswarms & Constellars have already been used in the recently concluded WCQ here in PH. Why? ‘Coz they’ve been reprinted as Duelist Box cards. I’m glad I didn’t get to face either archetype in the said event. Getting OTK’d by a Dragon Ruler deck is bummer enough. 😀
