KTS and Mantis: A comparative study of their tiebreaker systems

Abstract

The tiebreaker system is used to determine a player’s ranking in a tournament when there are multiple players with similar Match Wins. A hypothesis proposes that the final standings of the Swiss Rounds in a tournament is affected by the different tiebreaker system employed by the Konami Tournament Software (KTS) and Mantis Tournament Software (Mantis). Testing are conducted to examine and investigate the hypothesis.

Asia Championship 2013 and its flawed Tournament Format

Creator of HopeThe Yu-Gi-Oh! Asia Championship 2013 has concluded recently, with South Korea winning their very first Asia Championship.

Though the event was a great success, Konami Asia has uphold their tradition of implementing terrible tournament format. Switching back from a Swiss with Playoffs format to a Round Robin format was a good idea, but the execution leaves much to be desired.

Card Legality: Asian Restriction

With immediate effect, most restriction on the usage of Japanese promotional cards in official sanctioned tournaments in the Asia region (excluding Japan and South Korea) has been lifted.

Premium Pack, Limited Edition Pack, VJump Edition Pack and various Shueisha Promotional Cards from Weekly Jump, VJump, Valuable Book and Manga are now legal in Asia. However, exclusive cards from Duel Terminal 3 and onwards are still forbidden.

Legend of the Six Samurai: The Rise of Shien

With the introduction of the Legendary Six Samurai in Storm of Ragnarok, Konami has unveiled another side of the Six Samurai, creating one of the most intriguing stories in Yu-Gi-Oh! Through the compilation of the various Six Samurai cards, I will try to piece together the story of the Six Samurai.

Do note that the following are merely speculation and are in no way canon. The official story will probably be revealed in Master Guide 3.

Card Legality

Unlike Magic: The Gathering where any language version of a card is legal for tournaments held in any region, Yu-Gi-Oh! cards are only legal in the respective region that they are legally distributed in. However, with eBay and parallel importing, it is rather easy to acquire cards from another region, only to figure out that they are illegal in your region.

In this article we’re going to learn to differentiate the cards and their legality for each region. Although this article is written specifically for the Asian region, some points are still relevant for the other regions.
